Schneider Electric urges government and businesses to step up efforts to decarbonise

The Schneider Electric Innovation Summit World Tour 2021 is currently underway. Its aim is to call for accelerating carbon reductions to achieve the zero emissions target by 2050. The company calls for accelerating efforts to halve CO 2 emissions later this decade, using green electricity and new generation automation as a catalyst for change.

The world can accelerate climate action and cut carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions by half by 2030, says Schneider Electric, leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, winner of the first place in the Corporate Knights Ranking 2021 in the field of sustainable development . Launching the Innovation Summit World Tour 2021, President and CEO of Schneider Electric, Jean-Pascal Tricoire, advocated ” The 2030 imperative: A race against time “ paths towards zero CO emissions 2 , describing them as fully achievable. The report was prepared by the Schneider Electric Sustainability Research Institute.

This year’s Schneider Electric Innovation Summit World Tour (held from October 12 to November 12 this year) is devoted to global climate challenges. The schedule includes events related to Great Britain, Ireland, France and the Iberian Peninsula. Event attendees can learn about Schneider Electric’s digital innovations and learn more about Electricity 4.0 and next-generation automation.

Urgent need to act rapidly to decarbonise

President Jean-Pascal Tricoire, in his speech at the Innovation Summit World Tour 2021 conference, called on participants to take decisive steps towards decarbonisation. He presented a report by Schneider Electric that could be a plan to keep global warming to 1.5 ° Celsius. The report describes the need to reduce emissions by 30-50 percent. compared to the current level – and still in this decade. No action will make it practically impossible to limit the temperature rise to the 1.5 ° C threshold set by the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC).

The Schneider Electric Sustainability Research Institute models show how to actually reduce emissions by 10 gigatonnes of CO 2 / year by 2030 without exorbitant costs. In the “The 2030 imperative” scenario, 30 Gt of the current 50 Gt CO 2 / year emissions were found to be related to energy production and use. The scenario allows for a reduction of this amount by 30%. (ie 10 Gt CO 2 / year), which represents a significant acceleration over the current commitments. These amount to approx. 3 Gt CO 2 / year, ie only 10%. to reduce emissions. However, there remains the issue of around 20 Gt CO 2 / yr non-energy related emissions, which have not been modeled in the report.

That is why Schneider Electric calls on governments and enterprises to make three or even five times more effort. According to specialists from the Sustainability Research Institute, the only real path to success is, apart from increasing electrification, the implementation of proven digital technologies, which is be the fastest way to decarbonise buildings, transport and industry. This approach gives time to address sectors where decarbonisation will be more difficult. Modeling clearly shows that alternative paths will be too much of a burden for consumers.

Despite the accelerating pace of sustainability efforts and an increasing number of companies setting ambitious targets to tackle climate change, our research shows that we need to step up strongly. We also know that as Schneider Electric we are a unique part of this solution. Therefore, to support organizations in their pursuit of rapid decarbonisation and meeting their climate commitments, we are accelerating the development of our global sustainability consulting business. This will allow us to meet the growing demand for significant progress in meeting the goals of energy transition and climate action, said Jean-Pascal Tricoire, President and CEO of Schneider Electric .

The CEO of Schneider Electric added, Organizations today need a trusted partner that combines strategic planning and goal setting with proven experience in implementing solutions to achieve tangible sustainability results faster. As we have successfully overcome many of the sustainability challenges ourselves and thus developed world-leading digital and electrical solutions for our own facilities, we are well placed to support other organizations in this process.
