PLAY mobile operator to become climate neutral by 2035

For almost 10 years, the Illiad Group (owner of P4 PLC and the PLAY brand in Poland) has been taking steps to reduce the environmental impact of its operations. The group will invest EUR 1 billion over 15 years to achieve its climate goals. After reaching the first target – to only use energy from renewable sources, Illiad and its companies will focus on achieving two further goals:

  • by 2035, 15 years ahead of the Paris Agreement target, 0 net emissions for direct emissions (emission ranges 1 and 2);
  • by 2050, 0 net emissions of our most significant indirect emissions, i.e., from supply chains not controlled by the organization (Scope 3).

On October 4, 2021 The Iliad Group summarised the introduction of it’s climate commitments announced in January earlier this year. The areas were split into three stages, the first of which – to only use green energy – has already been implemented on the French and Italian markets. By the end of this year, 100% of the electricity used by the Group for its operations will come from renewable sources. This means a reduction in CO2 emissions by almost 138,000 tonnes from 2021, which is the equivalent of the annual carbon dioxide emissions of 50,000 cars. Play, which is part of the Iliad Group, is also committed to achieving this goal.

The Illiad Group is committed to obtaining 100% renewable electricity in Poland by 2022.

The first step towards zero emissions

In July 2021, the Polish company P4 announced its partnership with a supplier of energy from renewable sources. The supplied energy has a guarantee of origin, i.e. a certificate confirming its acquisition from hydroelectric power plants, wind farms or the sun.

The plan of reaching the use of only renewable energy sources in Poland assumes verification of suppliers, implementation of technologies that allow to reduce energy consumption and guarantees of energy origin. In this area, Play cooperates with Respect Energy. The contracted certificates of energy produced by wind farms and photovoltaic installations cover the period from July this year. The purchased volume will cover 100 percent of Play’s demand, which in the second half of this year will amount to nearly 120 million kWh, and in the next over 250 million kWh.

“The future of our planet has become a global challenge not only for citizens and international organizations, but also for companies. We at Play, being part of the Iliad Group, have decided to take specific actions to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions and ensure Poland becomes a better and safer country to live in . “

Jean Marc Harion , CEO of Play
