Colliers launches solar panel advisory services

Colliers, a leading consulting company on the real estate market, introduces a consulting and management service for the design and implementation of photovoltaic systems. This is the company’s response to the enormous increase in interest in photovoltaics recently in Poland and around the world.

Renewable energy sources play a key role in the transition to a sustainable and low-carbon economy. According to the directive on renewable energy sources, by 2030 EU countries should meet at least 32% of their total demand for energy from renewable sources. According to data from the European Union, the photovoltaic sector has been developing dynamically for 5 years, and electricity from this energy technology has the greatest potential to reduce costs and increase energy efficiency.

– As real estate market experts, we follow the trends and changes taking place there on an ongoing basis. The companies’ strong emphasis on development in the field of ESG favors the growing interest in more sustainable energy sources. In order to meet the needs of our clients and business partners, we have expanded our offer with specialist technical consultancy and effective project management services in the field of photovoltaic systems. Despite the fact that we are just starting with the new service, the interest on the part of customers is very high – says Jonathan Cohen, Senior Partner, Head of the Construction Consulting Department at Colliers.

Colliers experts point out the benefits of installing photovoltaics. Great ROI and greater independence from rising energy costs are not the only benefits.

– More and more developers and tenants appreciate the huge benefits of installing photovoltaics. Photovoltaics is associated with being relevant and fits perfectly into the company’s environmental responsibility strategies. For now, it is new, but given the potential for photovoltaics, we expect that every commercial building will be equipped with this type of solution within a few years. Entities responsible for the certification process in BREEM or LEED systems already appreciate the use of photovoltaics, which is conducive to obtaining a higher certificate level. Of key importance, especially in the context of rising energy prices and possible grid failures, is the operational and financial independence of photovoltaic systems – says Kamil Koper, Senior Associate in the Construction Consulting Department at Colliers.

Green savings

2020 was the best year in history for photovoltaics in Poland. According to the data of Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (Polish Electricity Grid), on 1 January last year, the power of photovoltaic installations was 1,299.6 MW, and a year later it reached the value of 3,935.74 MW. This means a threefold increase in just 12 months. This result gave Poland the fourth place in terms of increasing the installed PV capacity in the European Union (according to Solar Power Europe data for 2020). Only Germany, the Netherlands and Spain achieved better results.

Such an intense expansion of photovoltaics is the result of several factors, including: constantly decreasing production costs of panels, financial incentives offered by the government, rising electricity prices and increasing public awareness. As experts from Colliers calculate, the investment in a system with a capacity of 49.9 kWp (not requiring any permits) can fully pay for itself in less than 6 years.

– Our task is to maximize the return on investment by supporting clients at every stage of the system development: from design, through formalities, selection and supervision of contractors, to commissioning of the installation – adds Jonathan Cohen.

The Construction Consulting Department at Colliers is made up of professionals from various fields – project managers, architects, sustainable development specialists and engineers specializing in geodesy, electrical and mechanical installations and fire safety, with experience in design, construction and investment consulting. Such an extensive team of competences allows us to provide our clients with comprehensive support throughout the entire construction process.
