Speed ​​limited to 30 km/h on most roads in Paris

Vehicle traffic will be limited to 30 km / h from August 30, 2021 throughout Paris, except the ring road, the boulevards des Maréchaux and a few axes. Before this measure, 60% of Parisian roads were already limited to 30 km / h.

From August 30, traffic speed will be limited to 30 km / h in the vast majority of streets in the capital. The decision follows a consultation on the subject organized at the end of 2020. From October 27 to November 27, 2020, the City of Paris organized a consultation concerning the generalization of the speed limit to 30 km / h , during which 5 736 people gave an opinion including 5,445 via the online form, including a majority of Parisians (63% of respondents).

This new measure aims mainly to improve road safety and reduce noise pollution.

Parisians and Ile-de-France residents consulted

59% of Parisians in favor of reducing speed

All locations combined, we note a share of opinions rather favorable (50%) to a reduction in speed to 30km / h:

  • 31% are in favor of a general speed limit to 30 km / h.
  • 19% are for an adaptation of the speed according to the type of axes.

Some Parisians are in favor of the implementation of this measure on the condition that certain axes remain at 50 km / h.

  • 20% are in favor of 30 km / h, leaving certain axes at 50 km / h.

  • 16% are for generalization.
  • 20% are in favor of 30 km / h, leaving certain axes at 50 km / h.

61% are against the measure.

What are the popular themes during the consultation?

The majority of participants favored the theme of road safety (49%) to justify their choice.1 in 4 respondents advance the decrease in noise pollution to justify their choice.

What are the benefits of switching to 30km / h?

More security

The reduction in the authorized speed on the roads makes it possible, on average, to reduce the number of bodily accidents by around 25%. This reduction can reach more than 40% for serious and fatal accidents. The reduction in speed also allows better cohabitation of mobility within the city

Half the noise

A reduction of 20 km / h in the speed of road users can halve the noise (of the order of -3 decibels) near the traffic lanes. Noise pollution can affect health and quality of life, with physical and even psychological repercussions (stress, insomnia, depression, etc.).

Better sharing of public space for the benefit of soft and active mobility

Reducing speed limits the dangerousness of the road for all users. According to the World Health Organization (2004) , the risk of a pedestrian being killed in a collision is 80% at an impact speed of 50 km / h and only 10% at a speed of d. impact of 30 km / h.

In addition, the reduction in speed makes it possible to rethink public space, to organize it differently and to promote soft mobility. By increasing the speed from 50 to 30 km / h, an average of 20 to 50 cm of road network is freed up which can be reassigned to other uses: extension of sidewalks, revegetation, creation of cycle paths.

During the consultation, many questions and suggestions were expressed by Parisians. Many messages, particularly on public transport, have been analyzed by the City and will be taken into account in its discussions with its partners.

The streets of Paris remaining at 50km / h

The ring road (speed limited to 70 km / h) will not be affected, as well as the boulevards des Maréchaux and some axes (the avenues in the Bois de Boulogne and Vincennes, the Champs-Elysées, the avenue Foch, the avenue de la Grande Armée, rue Royale…) where the speed will remain at 50 km / h.
